Gadolinium Manufacturers

There are currently five different gadolinium-based contrast dyes that are approved by the FDA, and these are manufactured by four different companies namely GE Healthcare, Tyco Healthcare, Bayer Healthcare, and Bracco Diagnostics.

GE Healthcare’s Gadolinium-Based Omniscan

Omniscan is the gadolinium-based contrast dye manufactured by GE Healthcare. GE Healthcare is part of the General Electric group and has been manufacturing Omniscan for use in MRI scans since 1994. GE Healthcare is based in the United Kingdom but is working in more than 100 countries.

Tyco Healthcare – Another Gadolinium Manufacturer

Tyco Healthcare and its unit Mallinckrodt, is another of the gadolinium manufacturers who manufacture gadolinium-based contrast dyes for use in MRI scans. In particular, Tyco Healthcare manufactures OptiMARK. OptiMARK is also known as gadoversetamide. Tyco Healthcare has just separated from Tyco International and become Covidien.

Bayer Healthcare – the Gadolinium Manufacturer of Magnevist

The Gadolinium manufacturer who manufactures Magnevist gadolinium-based contrast dye is Bayer Healthcare and its unit Berlex Imaging. Berlex was the first manufacturer to produce MRI contrast dyes. The headquarters for Bayer Healthcare is in Germany but they also have people working worldwide.

Bracco Diagnostics

Bracco Diagnostics is a gadolinium manufacturer responsible for manufacturing two gadolinium-based contrast dyes approved by the FDA, namely Multihance and Prohance.
Prohance was approved for use in November 1992 and Multihance in November 2004. Bracco is an Italian company that entered the US in 1994.

The five gadolinium-based contrast dyes Omniscan, OptiMARK, Magnevist, Multihance and Prohance are produce by four gadolinium manufacturers, namely GE Healthcare, Tyco Healthcare (now known as Covidien), Bayer Healthcare, and Bracco Diagnostics. The gadolinium-based contrast dyes they manufacture have been used for a number of years, with Bayer having released the first MRI contrast dye. These dyes are used to help enhance the appearance of images created during MRI scans, in order to improve diagnostics.
